Residence Permit Guide for Students

What is a Student Residence Permit?

A student residence permit is an official document that allows foreign nationals to legally stay in Turkey for educational purposes. It must be applied for before your visa or authorized stay duration expires. With a student residence permit, you can:

  • Enter and exit Turkey without needing a visa.
  • Access public transportation discounts for students.

  • Rent an apartment and pay utility bills.
  • Register your mobile phone and obtain a Turkish SIM card.

Important Information About Student Residence Permits

First-Time Application:

  1. If you arrive without a visa:

    • You can stay in Turkey for up to 90 days without a residence permit.
    • Exceeding this period will result in a penalty payment and being barred from re-entering Turkey for 90 days.
    • You must apply for a residence permit immediately upon arrival.
  2. If you arrive with a visa:

    • You may stay for the duration allowed by your visa (e.g., 30, 60, or 90 days).
    • Staying beyond this time without a residence permit will result in penalties and the need to apply for a new visa to re-enter Turkey.

Renewing Your Residence Permit:

  • Start your renewal application 60 days before your current permit expires.
  • Failing to renew before the expiration date will result in penalties, forced departure from Turkey, and a 90-day ban on re-entry.

Processing Time:

  • Residence permit cards are issued within 1.5 to 3 months after the Migration Office receives your application.
  • Documents are submitted weekly by appointment, scheduled by the Migration Office.
